IMAP Mail outage (alpha)

Earlier this morning we had an outage on one of our IMAP mailstores. This will have affected customers with email accounts on our "alpha" mailstore. Other customers and services were unaffected. The server is back online and all services are now functioning normally. Please contact support if you are still experiencing problems.

The alpha mailstore has gone down again - bringing it back up now. We're beginning to suspect a hardware issue. We're working to get this sorted as quickly as we can.

Service is restored. We are still looking into the root cause so we can prevent a recurrence.

The root cause appears to be a kernel bug. We will be rebooting the server into a new kernel this evening between 1830 and 1900. There will be a short period of downtime for some email users during this period.

Some emails were found to be stuck in the queue on the alpha mailserver from the outage on Thursday. These have now been delivered.

This is unusual, as the mailstore delivers only to itself, and there should therefore never be anything in the queue.

We're updating our monitoring to ensure that should anything ever be queued there again we will notice immediately.
